The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has been given final approval to produce a new form of prescription drug for male erectile dysfunction (ED), Viagra (sildenafil) and Levitra (vardenafil).
“Men who have been diagnosed with ED or who have been treated with ED medication have increased levels of blood pressure and have reduced levels of the erectile tissue and have reduced the likelihood of having a sexual encounter,” said David Graham, Director, NHS Research and Innovation. “ED is a common and complex condition, which can be difficult to treat, and it has a significant impact on a man’s quality of life and relationship satisfaction.”
Viagra and Levitra are the latest in a class of treatments for ED. It is being supported by the National Institute for Health Research (NICE) and the European Society for Sexual Medicine (ESM).
“The impact of ED medication can be felt in a men’s sexual environment,” said Dr Graham.
“ED treatment has long been the focus of attention and concern in this sector, and it is important that we remain committed to developing effective treatments.”
This is the first time that a new form of prescription drug has been produced to address the issue of ED.
Viagra and Levitra are currently the second-best selling medicines on the market after Cialis and Levitra are the third-best selling medicines on the market after Viagra and Cialis.
The new form of prescription drugs, which has been introduced under the name Sildenafil, contains a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor. This is used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence) in men.
It is not known if the new form of prescription drug will have a longer effect than Viagra and Levitra.
Sildenafil is currently approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to treat the condition. It is the first new treatment for erectile dysfunction in humans. Sildenafil is used for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), and works by increasing blood flow to the penis.
Sildenafil has been shown to be effective in men with PAH who have already been treated with ED medication.
Levitra is currently only approved for use by men with PAH who have been on a nitrate drug to treat chest pain.
Both drugs are being manufactured under the name Vardenafil.
Viagra is currently also being used in combination with other treatments for the condition as an ED treatment, such as a vacuum erection device (VED) and an erection-inducing drug.
“Our research has shown that the effectiveness of Viagra, with its active ingredient, sildenafil, is similar in men with and without ED,” said Dr Graham.
“The new form of prescription drug will provide a new way for men to manage their ED and may help improve their sexual function.
“While the effectiveness of these treatments may be similar for men with ED, we feel the research supporting the claims of these treatments for ED is strong and should be considered by patients and doctors.”
